Verification requirements must be selected for the actual asset, intervention and governing professional or contractual requirements.
1. State the objective precisely
Replace broad language such as “fix the problem” with an objective that identifies the element, zone and intended change. Separate support improvement, level recovery, void filling, movement control and drainage correction where they are different outcomes.
2. Establish the baseline
Record the pre-work condition using agreed references. The baseline may include coordinates, levels, crack or joint observations, response under a defined load, survey coverage, photographs, operating conditions and instrumentation.
3. Define acceptance before mobilisation
Acceptance criteria should identify the measure, method, location, tolerance, timing and responsible reviewer. They should also explain what happens when conditions encountered differ from the assumed basis.
- Use the same reference system before, during and after work.
- Distinguish process control from proof of the final outcome.
- Record measurement uncertainty and environmental or operating conditions.
- Avoid criteria that cannot be measured safely or consistently on the site.
4. Set hold points and change control
Define when work pauses for review: unexpected material response, movement outside agreed limits, obstruction, service conflict, unusual consumption, inaccessible zones or inconsistent verification results. Record who can approve a revised scope.
5. Capture the installed work
Use a consistent log for location, time, crew, equipment, material batch where relevant, installation parameters, observations, deviations and supporting photographs. Link every record to the site reference grid or asset identifier.
6. Close out with boundaries visible
The completion record should compare baseline and final evidence, state whether each criterion was met, identify exclusions and unresolved uncertainty, and define any monitoring or maintenance actions. Do not turn a limited verification result into a broader claim.
A compact verification brief
- Asset, zone and observed condition.
- Agreed intervention objective and exclusions.
- Baseline evidence and references.
- Acceptance measures, tolerances and timing.
- Hold points, escalation and change authority.
- Required production and completion records.
- Post-work monitoring and final reviewer.
